Manual and automated arc welding processes are used in the welding department. The aluminium and steel welding locations hold current EN 15085-2 CL1 certificates.

Automated welding

Automated longitudinal welding up to 30 metres

CLOOS longitudinal systems run continuous seams along sidewalls, roofs and underframe assemblies up to 30 metres, with the structure clamped in a dedicated welding jig for the full length of the seam. AMM designs and builds those jigs in its own engineering department.

Non-destructive testing

Six non-destructive testing methods

Six methods cover the surface and the internal condition of a weld without cutting the structure.

  • Visual testing (VT)

    Direct and aided examination of weld surface, profile and geometry.

  • Penetrant testing (PT)

    Coloured penetrant draws out surface-breaking cracks and pores on aluminium and steel.

  • Magnetic particle testing (MT)

    Magnetic particles reveal surface and near-surface indications in ferromagnetic steel.

  • Ultrasonic testing (UT)

    Ultrasonic pulses locate internal discontinuities in thicker sections.

  • Radiographic testing (RT)

    Radiography records the internal condition of a weld as an image.

  • Leak testing (LT)

    Leak testing proves tightness on closed welded assemblies such as tanks.
